Kinetic friction coefficient and cyclic wear characteristics during thousands of cycles

The strength of #composites is tied to the properties of fibre-matrix interfaces. In this fantastic example, researchers from University of California, Berkeley and Empa used the Alemnis Standard Assembly (ASA) fitted with a SmarTip transducer to evaluate the fundamental #friction and #wear characteristics of SiC/PyC/SiC interfaces. This novel technique allows monitoring of the kinetic friction coefficient and cyclic wear characteristics during thousands of cycles. Such tests can contribution to improved composite design with applications ranging from jet engines to nuclear fuel cladding. #tribology#micromechanics
